Dr. Seuss's Birthday Party on MARCH 2 was a spectacular success! Each child will received a party bag with birthday crown and traveled around to visit our Guest Readers at Table 1, Table 2 and Table 3. As children finished hearing Dr. Seuss stories at each table, they received a party favor for their party bag. At Table 4, children will made festive party necklaces with Mrs. Z and friends! When the bells and whistles went off, we sang, "Happy Birthday" to Dr. Seuss and then two birthday cakes were brought in and devoured by all! The 4S Ranch Library Staff received the Team Trophy for this event. Thank you to all that made this such a wonderful day to remember!

Good Luck at Princeton, Grace! Your Legacy Continues at the 4S Ranch Library

Neighbor Spotlight: You Jin ‘Casey’ Jeon
By Elizabeth Marie Himchak

A couple dozen elementary and middle school students gather at 4S Ranch Library from 4-5 p.m. each Friday for tutoring, a free program led by You Jin “Grace” Jeon.

You Jin 'Grace' Jeon, a Rancho Bernardo resident, has started a free tutoring program at the 4S Ranch Library. The Rancho Bernardo 16-year-old began the program in October 2009, shortly after founding the Education in Action club during her freshman year at Del Norte High School.

Now a sophomore, Jeon continues as the club’s president, with duties that include overseeing the one-on-one tutoring sessions, she said. “We’re trying to help the community and this program helps to educate and to improve the community,” Jeon said, adding private tutoring can be very expensive, something not all can afford.

Because there are more youngsters needing tutoring than high school tutors, Jeon said partnerships are for three-month intervals that correspond with Del Norte’s trimester schedule. This also allows tutors to participate as their after-school activities permit.

The current season has 26 partnerships she said, adding since they pretty much take over all available spaces throughout the library the only way the program could expand would be to add a second day, which has been considered. There is a waiting list of tutees, but not yet enough tutors.

She said children work with the same tutor each week so a bond can form.
“On the first day, the tutor meets with the parents to set goals for the season,” she said. “The tutors help in the child’s areas of weakness and find worksheets for the kids who also bring their homework.

“It’s like a mentoring program, where there is not only academic support but the tutees are encouraged through school and have someone to talk to,” she said. Ways to get shy children to open up is one topic tutors discuss during their weekly lunchtime meetings on campus. The 36 club members also work on other projects, she said. These include a mentoring program they have with Del Sur Elementary students for an hour each Tuesday; a partnership with school in Costa Rica, where Del Norte students raise funds so they can send needed materials; and a partnership forming between Del Norte and a school in Haiti.

“As you can see, we not only help our immediate community, but also support our global community,” Jeon said. “We have big plans for the future.”

The aspiring educator said the most rewarding part of the tutoring program for her is “the grateful smiles on parents’ faces when we tell them what we accomplished during our tutoring session that day. It lets us know that we really are making a positive impact on the world step-by-step.”

In addition to Education in Action, Jeon said she is involved with Del Norte’s Link Crew, which connects freshmen to older students; Math Club and Peer Leaders Uniting Students.

She has also completed 78 hours of volunteer service (not including tutoring) at 4S Ranch Library and each Saturday she volunteers for two hours with her 15-year-old sister, Cho Hoo “Kate” Jeon, at Villa Rancho Bernardo Care Center. There, the sisters try to “brighten the day” of seniors by leading activities such as bingo, she said.

TEXT:

            4S Ranch - Meet Your Neighbor Laura Zuckerman - 4S Ranch Library's Mrs. Z.

Watch Laura Zuckerman work her magic during Preschool Story Time and Craft with "Mrs. Z." and its hard to tell who is enjoying the experience more - the kids sitting cross-legged on the carpet eyes fixed on their favorite instructor or the adults along the side of the room thankful to see their kids so engaged in a fun activity. Every Friday at 10:39 and 11:30 am at the 4S Ranch Library, "Mrs. Z" leads young kids through a series of engaging, entertaining and educational activities that have them learning skills needed to prepared them for kindergarten while also making friends and laughing. For the former elementary school teacher, this is a big part of what makes her job at the neighborhood library so enjooyable and rewarding.

"My favorite grade to teach was second grade," Zuckerman shared recently. "I love curriculum development for younger kids. The zero-to-five-age range -early literacy really -is my passion. I know how important these first few years of life are. I like being able to focus much of my work on the little ones."

Zuckerman spent six years in a classroom as an elementary school teacher before following in her father's footsteps as a librarian. She has now been working among the bookstacks and in several San Diego County libraries for 12 years. As the coodinator of the 4S Ranch Library's Youth Service, Zuckerman is proud of the diverse and wide-ranging schedule available for area youth at the local library. She works hard to bring in new programs - such as yoga and music classes - but she remains partial to preschool story time.

"I'm most proud of story time because I see the children grow through the program," the Youth Services Librarian and mother of a 19-year-old daughter said. "I see the curriculum come alive with the children through the activities we do. It's also very rewarding when parents come up and tell me how much their kids have been looking forward to story time. This matters to kids in their lives."

Although "Mrs. Z. and Preschool Story Time have taken a brief break this summer, the popular story times will begin again in September. As always, the activity will begin with a good morning song that follows a pattern that the kids can identify qickly and use throughout the day. "Mrs. Z" then guides the children into kindergarten readiness skill building with a preschool concept song and chart follwed by the first read aloud book. "Mrs. Z" uses a lot of sing-songy language to keep the kids' attention and constanly works to bring them into the sotry. Near the end of the session, children have the opportunity to complete a craft activity.

"Our Preschool Story Time curriculum is driven by the California Department of Education, California Preschool learning Foundations and Curriculum Frameworks, which all of our district schools follow," said Zuckerman, who writes her own programs for each weekly session. "Parents are concerned with getting their child ready for kindergarten. We make sure we include time for ABCs, 123s, knowing the letters of the alphabet, the sounds the letters make and units of money. But we also have lots of activities designed to develop social skills - like how to wait in line and share.

"Our goal with story time is that we want to be able to support parents and caregivers with the early literacy development of their children birth to five years."
